Freedom beach

Seaside Heights, New Jersey is fairly run of the mill when it comes to summer beach destinations. It is busy in the summer, and the town survives on the summer tourist dollars, so it offers lots of things you would expect of a summer resort town. Hotels, nice beaches and even a large commercial boardwalk with things like food stands, amusement rides and arcades. Seaside Heights also took one more step that will help keep it in line with other beach destinations – they recently restricted smoking on the beach. Even so, the town restrictions are not as exact as some other places that ban smoking on the entire beach. In Seaside you can smoke on the first twenty feet of sand that is adjacent to the boardwalk.

Smoking has long since fallen out of favor as something that is thought about cool or acceptable. Every smoker knows that restrictions have come to be more and more exact over the past decade. Non-smokers are somewhat aware of the changes but not as much as man that needs to normally smoke. So the median non-smoker might not consideration if smoking is restricted or not on a beach they only visit on an infrequent basis. Beaches in most places have been a bit slow to adopt no smoking policies but there is a lot of distinction from place to place. Even within New Jersey.

Beach

Belmar, New Jersey has a somewhat similar policy to Seaside Heights in that they allow smoking in designated zones on the beach. These are tiny in size and at the back of the beach. It also has similar you-can-smoke-here zones on their boardwalk. Belmar was in the forefront of cutting down on smoking on the beach, as they were the first beach in the Us to restrict smoking.

Bradley Beach, New Jersey has taken a more restrictive approach. Their plan is to ban smoking on the beach, the boardwalk and even on the sidewalk that is adjacent to the boardwalk. Bradley Beach’s ban is not scheduled to take supervene until 2010, provided the ordinance passes the town council.

I think if you are a smoker and like the beach, the handwriting is on the wall. It would seem an outdoor venue, unblemished with a sea breeze, would not be a place where smoking needs to be restricted. The qoute though lies not in the second hand smoke but in the trash left behind by smokers discarding their spent cigarette butts. The filters do not break down very well and it is difficult for beach cleaning tool to absolutely clear them away. Expect more smoking bans on other New Jersey beaches as time goes on. All in the name of group security of course.
